SPLENDID JAZZ AT THE ELIOTTS
Last Thursday 26th January 2012 was a night long to be remembered at the O'Callaghan Eliott Hotel as we welcomed multi-instrumentalist Stik Cook on piano. Stik was a regular at the Eliotts several years back before he moved to Granada. His multi talents has well been appreciated here as he has featured on piano, double bass and drums, a real master at all of them. Completing the trio for the evening were Charlie Rovegno on drums and George Posso on double bass with a very special guest appearance from local jazz guitarist and good friend Elie Massias who flew over from New York for a few days to visit family and friends and share his musical talent with us here at the Eliotts jazz night.
George and Charlie were thrilled to play with both Elie and Stik and so were guest musicians for the night who included Djamal Adib on alto sax, Mitch Jansen on trumpet, Chris Riley on tenor sax, Craig Philbin on trumpet, Stephen Riley also on trumpet and Paul Riley on trombone. Also present on the night was Jelena Stupaka who has been a regular at the Eliotts jazz nights for the past two months and has become very popular.
Jelena has been in Gibraltar for several months now and at her early 20s brings with her an immense musical background with different styles and genres although her first performances as a jazz singer have been launched in our very own Eliotts jazz nights.
Stik was soon at the piano eager to get on with the music as he started off 'I Remember you' moving quickly into a bossa version of 'Body and Soul' which attracted young Djamal on alto sax for a superb performance. Djamal stayed on and featured on 'Angel Eyes' to warm applause. The sensational Jelena was up next for her usual spot starting with a new one on her repertoire entitled 'Love me or Leave me' followed by Stevie Wonder's 'Isn't She Lovely' played in bossa style and closing her spot and the first set of the evening with Jobim's 'One Note Samba' receiving a roaring applause from the supportive audience.
The second set was the highlight of the evening as Elie Massias joined together with Chris, Craig, Stephen, Djamal, Mitch and Damin on drums for 'Nica's Dream'. The tune lasted forever as everyone took a solo but was well worth listening to. Everyone contributed their own ideas and style with Elie prominent on his unique guitar style and sound. Charlie Parker's 'Dexterity' and Confirmation' followed with Djamal's request for 'Sugar' with him featuring on it and the rest on offerings. The music went on into the early hours with 'Joy Spring', 'Mercy mercy Mercy' and signing off a most splendid evening of jazz with 'Charlie Parker's 'My Little Suede Shoes' to wild applause.
